Rio de Janeiro fought off a technically sound bid by Madrid to host the 2016 Olympics as IOC voters went for historic choice

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wept tears of joy and could not contain his emotions as Rio de Janeiro was named the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games at a ceremony in Copenhagen tonight.

The Rio bid was marked by a sense of change. The bid committee stressed how awarding the Games to a South American country for the first time would be a catalyst for a changing sense of pride in South America and clearly the International Olympic Committee members were in agreement.

Rio was down to the final two against Madrid after the shocking exit of Chicago in the first round.

The presence of US President Barack Obama in Copenhagen on Friday to lobby for Chicago had been expected to play a big part in the city’s chances and the five-hour visit by Obama this morning even had Lula deterred.

Speaking to the press following the celebrations, Lula joked about the intensive TV coverage of Obama’s every movement while in Copenhagen.

At the time of going to press the Obamas were still en route to the United States and the Chicago camp had been uncharacteristically silent about their reaction to the vote.

The Rio committee had already been hitting headlines in recent days after a Spanish delegate questioned if the Games could ever be held in Brazil over safety concerns.

The Chicago bid was presumptuous. It promised the usual media-hyped American Dream - which Michele said her Dad would have loved. It missed out the Olympic mission: to be for the people, not the moneymen.

Rio hit the spot. Excellent!

Unfortunately, Brazil does not even meet the conditions to achieve the World Cup, let alone promote an Olympiad, further in a short time. It would be utopian to think that Brazil is capable of this feat. Not only lack infrastructure in the hotel network and security problems. The hole is below. Missing a greater awareness of the project (I am not referring only to the Olympics) is a national and not just regional. In Brazil, among the problems, there is too much bureaucracy, which not only delays, but also affect the progress of works, not to mention the embelezzment that exist. Also a lack of adequate transport infrastructure, which in view of the IOC, is a more serious problem than the hotel structure, since, as envisioned, the military will patrol the streets of Rio, which is likely. And in the event of a serious incident as an attack for example, the structure (or rather the lack of structure) of public hospitals is extremely poor, and you’ll forget this extra demand. For transport, one would have to make massive investments in subway and making it more buses and lines … etc.. Honestly, the viewpoint of the existing structure, Sao Paulo is a city a little more prepared than the Rio de Janeiro, to have an event of this magnitude. Lula is a good president, but he won't be on 2016 as a president and that's so hard to tell how Rio de Janeiro will be ready by then.

Even as I die hard American I agree with np. I think it is great that Rio got the games. The Olympics should be sacred and exempt from as much politics as possible. It is a shame the games have never been to South America so this is a great step forward.

Because of the notice of Headquarters 2016 Olympics, the subject ( Pilot Whale Slaughter by Faroese Islanders)resurfaced and is causing commotion in my country (Brazil), scratching the image many have of Denmark country. Posts titles as 'Celebration of Shame and the Insanity of Humanity in Denmark! ' has been published. Circulating the Internet and among many Brazilian Internet users a petition demanding an end to this indiscriminate killing and unmotivated. Is the suffering inflicted by Faroese whaling ethically justified? Or is whale-killing an atrocity that has no place in any civilised society?
Arrangements must be made to that barbarism will not continue to repeat itself.
