Soc Dem leader facing more questions about husband’s residency

Social Democrat leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt has admitted that she provided inaccurate information about the number of days her husband resides in the country.

Thorning-Schmidt, who is poised to become the country’s next prime minister, said she made a ‘careless’ mistake by telling the Justice Ministry in 2009 that her husband, Stephen Kinnock, lived in Denmark about 200 days a year.

According to B.T. newspaper, when Thorning-Schmidt and Kinnock purchased their home in the Østerbro district in 2009, she informed the Justice Ministry that Kinnock was in the country every week from Friday to Monday. The information is required of all foreign citizens when purchasing property.

At the beginning of July, however, Thorning-Schmidt argued that her husband, who works in Switzerland, was not subject to Danish taxes because he did not spend the minimum 180 days in the country.

The couple later announced that Kinnock would pay Danish taxes to avoid any ‘grey zones’ regarding the tax laws.
