Conservative Party wants to extend the ban on ‘Taleban symbol’ to all public places in Denmark

The governing party has rejected a proposal from its coalition partner, the Conservative Party, to ban people from covering their face with clothing such as burkas and niqabs.

‘We do not want to see burkas in Denmark,’ said Naser Khader, the integration spokesman for the Conservatives.

Khader, who immigrated to Denmark from Syria and who helped established the Modern Muslims group, said the burka symbolised the Taleban and oppression of women. It had nothing do to with Islam.

‘The modern burka was instituted by the Taleban when it came to power. I see it as a symbol of the Taleban,’ he said.

Khader said the burka was ‘un-Danish’ and should be completely banned in this country.

The ban was part of a raft of integration proposals approved by Conservative members of parliament following the party’s annual summer group meeting.

Under the ban, women would not be prevented from wearing other forms of headscarves. It would apply to all public areas but not people’s homes. A penalty for violating the potential ban had not yet been considered.

The Conservatives’ proposal received the support of the Danish People’s Party, a key government ally, and the opposition Social Democrats.

But the party’s government ally, the prime minister’s Liberal Party, said legislating against certain types of clothing was a step too far.

‘Burkas should not be permitted for people who work in the public sector,’ Peter Christiansen, the party’s political spokesperson, said. ‘But that’s where we draw the line.’

Islamic Faith Society spokesman Imran Shah said the ban was unnecessary as only three or four women in Denmark wore the burka, while 30-40 women wore the niqab.

How can you expect Danish not to be fed up with islamic immigration.....paying the highest taxes in the world so muslims immigrants can get free education, free health care, free languages class, free access to kindergarden and many types of subsidies etc etc etc.....and all end up with that ?? our parents had to fight so hard to get a welfare state after the war and all end up with this ??
rantingbrit  - CPH post. Why all the hate filled posts?   |2009-08-17 14:57:34
I do not understand why CPH post allows so many hate filled posts? Is there any reason why when a post by certain individuals is challenged, it is never published? I thought this place was for healthy debate not unhelpful comments.

I support the ban on burka's - burka's do not belong here or anywhere on earth but if some people in some countries decide to pervert their religion - not my problem. If I were a woman, I would expect to wear a veil if I visited Saudi Arabia.. in Denmark, women do not wear them. End of.. Secondly, I like to see the eyes of the person I communicate with.. its called human interaction by some.
But I ask, what has the burka got to do with our parents fighting in the war. My grandfather fought in Japan.. so what? Should I always feed on his achievement? And what did they fight for in Denmark? Most Danes were on the German side anyway.. the resistance is a myth, just like in France. Only a handful of great people resisted. From the posts here it seems a few people would be waving swastika's if/when there is another invasion.

@rantingbrit

My post has nothing to do with the war and the resistence but with the hard working people who fought hard after the war so Denmark is a rich country providing so many things free to immigrants like education, health etc etc

Danes pay some of the highest taxes in the world obviously not to support their 'immigrant invasion', but to reassure themselves that they have public services that are just about par with the rest of Western Europe...but hardly any better. A fair few immigrants, I might add, pay some of your highest tax contributions (in absolute terms) but hardly rant on about the large number of 'assisted' Danes this helps to support. Perhaps they only feel bad when members of any ethnic minority end up being the recipient of any of their tax kroner.
