Danish soldiers who came under enemy fire in Afghanistan may have also been hit by Danish mortars
Four Danish soldiers were wounded while on patrol in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan on Sunday and the army is not ruling out that they may have been hit by friendly fire.
Defence Command said in a press release that the soldiers came under enemy fire while on patrol. Danish soldiers at the nearby forward operation base Budwan, provided support in the form of mortars.
When the soldiers had been evacuated to the Camp Bastion field hospital for treatment, medical staff not only treated injuries associated with gunshot wounds, but also mortar fragments.
The Judge Advocate General Corps has been asked to investigate the case and is sending two investigators to the area this week.
The wounded soldiers received treatment at the field hospital and the military reports that all were able to phone home and inform their relatives of their condition.
If the suspicions prove true, it won’t be the first case of friendly fire suffered by Danish forces in Afghanistan. In September 2007, two Danish soldiers died after British troops accidentally opened fire on them.
