One of the country’s supermarket chains stops selling eel due to its rapidly declining numbers

Føtex will be the first supermarket chain to stop selling eel, whose numbers in the wild are in rapid decline.

Management for Danske Supermarkeder, which operates the chain, stated that although eel sales were profitable, the move was for ‘a good cause’.

Danske Supermarkeder’s competitor Coop is still selling eel, but the company said it was only the farm-raised variety.

According to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, 99 percent of the eel population in European waters has disappeared over the past 30 years.

The Danish Sport Fishing Association has stated it supports a full ban on eel fishing and sales.
