Survey reveals less interest among Danes in spending Christmas in the southern sunshine this year

An estimated 30,000 Danes will take a charter trip this year during the Christmas holidays – and that’s 10 percent fewer than last year, according to a survey from travel agency Star Tour.

And those who are leaving are more likely to leave the Christmas presents at home, as only every fifth of the 2000 people surveyed said they will stuff their suitcase full of gifts.

‘I think the results indicate that many people are choosing to purchase a summer holiday instead of going away for Christmas, probably because we’re still suffering from the financial crisis,’ said Stig Elling, Star Tour’s sales director. ‘Luckily summer charter sales are 25 percent over last year’s level at this stage.’

The survey also shows the most popular destinations of the season are still Gran Canaria and Tenerife, while southern Thailand has risen to third place.

Egypt placed fourth on the list while two other Canarian islands, Lanzarote and Fuertaventura, tied for the fifth spot.
