Danish soldiers operating in Afghanistan do not have to wait to be attacked before opening fire on the enemy

The introduction of extra US forces to the Helmand province in Afghanistan means that Danish soldiers stationed in the area can open fire first on Taleban enemies.

Previously Danish forces could only open fire to defend themselves.

The US sent an extra 21,000 Marines to Afghanistan in an attempt to secure the southern province from the Taleban. Battalion Commander Frank Lissner said that the Rules of Engagement, which regulate the rules of battle, had now changed to accommodate the three forces operating together in the region

‘The British, Americans and Danish are now operating in the same area and we couldn’t all have different Rules of Engagement,’ said Lissner, who said the Danes have permission to open fire if they are sure they are targeting the enemy.

The changed rules came into effect three weeks ago as all three countries stepped up their military efforts in the region.
