A single mother has appealed a High Court decision to extradite her to the US to face drug smuggling charges
A 42-year-old woman could face extradition to the US on charges of drug smuggling, after the Eastern High Court overturned a lower court ruling today.
The case originally goes back to 1997-1998, when the woman, Camilla Broe, allegedly attempted to smuggle over 100,000 ecstasy pills into the US state of Florida, where she resided at the time. However, Broe moved back to Denmark in 2001 before the official investigation was completed or charges filed.
In 2003, the US authorities charged Broe with drug trafficking and requested her extradition. The Justice Ministry originally approved the extradition, but Broe took the matter to the city court of Lyngby, where she won her case to remain in Denmark. As one of her arguments for being allowed to stay in Denmark, Broe said she was a single mother of a now 10-year-old girl.
But prosecutors appealed the Lyngby court decision to the High Court, which ruled today that the extradition terms are valid, including the Justice Ministry’s demand that after the first six months, any eventual jail sentence handed down to Broe by the US authorities would be served in Denmark.
Immediately after the decision, Broe’s attorney appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. The case will set a precedent as no Danish citizen has ever been extradited to a country outside the European Union.
