Towns received a month’s worth of rain in less than two days

Towns in western Zealand were doing their best to dry out yesterday after being inundated with what amounts to a month’s worth of rain in 36 hours.

When the rain finally stopped falling yesterday, a total of 88.9 millimetres of rain had fallen in the town of Slagelse. The July average is 66 millimetres.

The heavy rains, which fell as downpours at times, flooded roads and left many homes with waterlogged basements.

Meteorologists with national weather service DMI called yesterday’s rains a ’20-year event’.

After a brief respite yesterday, clean-up efforts will be hindered by more rain forecast for today.
