Cemetery now pledges to clarify rules for grave ornaments

Angry family members of deceased buried at suburban Risbjerg Cemetery are up in arms after discovering that the person stealing their gravesite memorabilia is none other than the facility’s own employee.

According to local newspaper Hvidovre Avis, lanterns, baskets, candles and other items left near tombstones by cemetery visitors have been systematically taken by the cemetery’s gardener.

Risbjerg’s management said the employee was new and was simply enforcing the cemetery’s rules – to the letter.

Family members contacted Hvidovre Avis over the matter, believing that the items were stolen, even after being told they were removed by the employee.

‘The gardener apparently enjoys stealing people’s things,’ wrote one reader. ‘This woman is an evil thief,’ wrote another.

Jacobsen apologised for what he called a ‘misunderstanding’ on the employee’s part. He said the removed items have not been thrown out and that families can reclaim them.

According to Jacobsen the cemetery would be ‘sticking to the old rules’ regarding decoration of gravesites. But the issue, he said, would soon be put before the parish council to hopefully be resolved once and for all.
