City council delivers on promise to deal with social problems in Copenhagen surburb Tingbjerg

The city council is relocating 15 socially vulnerable families from the Tingbjerg area of Copenhagen.

Tingbjerg has experienced problems with youth crime in recent years and the move is designed to deal with that as well as help the families to a fresh start away from a life of crime.

A council spokesman said the voluntary offer was aimed at families whose children had been drawn to the crime in the area.

Fifteen families have already accepted the offer and a further 10 will be asked if they also want to move. The families would be given houses in areas without major crime problems and the children offered education.

‘This shows that people want to change. They can see that their social problems are not good for their families,’ deputy mayor for social affairs Mikkel Warming told DR news.
