Another week, another hate crime at the World Outgames in Copenhagen as fireworks thrown at athletes

Copenhagen police have charged a 31-year-old man with committing a hate crime after he threw powerful explosives at participants in the city’s World Outgames event, public broadcaster DR has indicated in a report.

A 31-year-old city man was arrested yesterday at St. Jakobs Church in Østerbro, where he allegedly threw the explosives at the games’ track and field participantsat Østerbro Stadium. He managed to throw two bombs before police arrived on the scene and took him into custody.

It would be the second hate crime charge in less than a week in connection with the World Outgames in Copenhagen.

On Friday last week, two men were charged with hate crimes after attacking three gay men attending the World Outgames event.

A hate crime is defined as being when the perpetrator's motivation is the victim’s sexual orientation, religion or race.

The World Outgames is a sporting, cultural and human rights event for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people being held in Copenhagen from 22 July to 2 August.

There is no excuse for this type of behaviour. We are living in a democracy which should be free of autrocious hate crimes such as these perpetuated against the gay community. I trust that the police will send a strong message out when dealing with these perpetrators.
