Three of Copenhagen’s pay toilets become more accessible allowing coinless customers to use SMS payment

Public toilets at Gråbrødre Torv, Hans Knudsens Plads and Borgergade have been fitted with an SMS service that gives customers the option to pay without using coins.

They are the first of their type in Denmark and include a handicap friendly toilet, as well as baby changing tables.

The 2 kr. coin payment model still works in the toilets, while the new sms payment costs 2 kr. in addition to the standard SMS fee.

UNWIRE and Låsepartner City are the companies behind the new lavatory tune-ups, established in cooperation with the City of Copenhagen.

‘The new SMS service provides a more flexible alternative for the users. We’re looking forward to seeing whether or not it becomes popular in Copenhagen. A success could lead to more SMS toilets being built around town.’ Claus Robl, division manager of the city’s technical and environmental department.

Robl said no other SMS toilets are planned for at least six months, when an evaluation of the success of the three current locations is made.
