Danish writers score triple Emmy success as their third police drama for public broadcaster wins award
The Danish scriptwriting duo of Peter Thorsboe and Mai Brostrøm have brought home their third International Emmy Award, after their ‘Livvagterne’ (The Protectors) show won in the Best Drama category last night.
At the ceremony in New York City, The Protectors won out over four other international dramas, including acclaimed British production ‘Spooks’.
‘The Protectors’ follows a group of intelligence officers acting as bodyguards to high-level Danish politicians and has proved popular for public broadcaster DR.Thorsboe and Brostrøm have previously won the same honour for their two previous police dramas – ‘Rejseholdet’ (Unit One) and ‘Ørnen’ (The Eagle), in 2002 and 2005 respectively.
‘These three series were made as a police trilogy, so for all three to win…it’s completely incredible. This is huge for us,’ said a proud Thorsboe last night.
In addition to its three International Emmy wins for the police dramas, DR has previously taken home awards for ‘Nikolaj og Julie’ in 2003 and ‘Unge Andersen’ in 2005, which was produced by Nordisk Film.
DR children’s drama ‘Mille’ was also up for an Emmy last night, but lost out in the children’s category to the UK’s ‘Dustbin Baby’.
