Queen could abdicate next year

According to a new book, Queen Margrethe II will be the first Danish monarch to abdicate the throne

Queen Margrethe II plans to accede to her husband Prince Henrik’s wishes by abdicating the Danish throne and moving with him to France next year, according to a new book.

In his book ’Royale Rejser – bag kulisserne med de kongelige’ (’Royal Travels – Behind the Scenes with the Monarchy’), journalist and royal expert John Lindskog writes that the Queen will soon hand over her regal role to her son Crown Prince Frederik and follow her husband to his beloved home Chateau de Cayx.

Lindskog cites ‘sources close to the royal family who know both Prince Henrik and Queen Margrethe’, according to B.T. newspaper.

He writes that Prince Henrik has been plagued by numerous health issues over the past couple years and has made no secret of his desire to retire to his homeland.

‘A number of events appear to have pushed forward something the Queen has always been against but that certain circumstances seem to suggest she will nonetheless do – be the first Danish monarch to abdicate the throne,’ the book reads.

Queen Margrethe II, according to Lindskog, will officially abdicate on 16 April, her 70th birthday.

A spokesperson from the Royal Court denied the book's claims, saying neither the Queen nor Prince Henrik has any intention of moving from Denmark.

I could never understand how a democratic country like Denmark can accept royalty. Everyone is equal in Denmark except for one family. That is very Medieval!

What I find so ironic is that even marrying the queen, assuming a royal title, and being pampered for life still isn't enough for this ex-pat to want to stay in Denmark.

I agree with you whole heartedly topsy. I think it is fascinating and a huge credit to Danish culture that its monarchy is the oldest and most continuous in the world.

Despite the fact that a royal family is a very antiquated notion in the modern western world, the actualy responsibilities the royal family holds are not of any particular importance from a governing and policy perspective. So their unofficial role as bl.a. Denmark's PR department is aptly suited. Of course, the fact that they all live extra fat & happy on our tax money is a bit annoying, but it certainly isn't the worst waste of tax-payer money the government partakes of.

I remember the first time visiting Denmark, I was fascinated by the Queen guards in Amalienborg.....
When you travel how nice to see countries keeping some beautifull traditions....how boring the world will be if we all countries look the same...

Folks in Denmark will complain the the royal family is a big waste of money for a queen that has not even a legal role in a country where she is the chief of state. So give the monarch more legal responsibility for the great nation of Denmark. Danes have a democratic process to give and to take away. What are you afraid of? With only 7 to 10 million Danes left in the world it's worth the gamble to give the royal family a greater role than they currently have. It worked pretty good for the Hapsburgs

The Danish Queen has performed her role as an embasidor for Denmark for long enough, let her retire if she wants to.
I don't think that the Danish Royals are too bad at spending taxpayers money, not compared to the British Royals. There are also only a handful who are 'on the payrole' wheras in the UK it seems everyones who has some connection thinks they should be 'treated like royalty'.
I think the Danish Royals are much more 'down to earth' compared to in the UK, I don't get the impression that they think they are 'above us all', quite the oposite, the queen actually serves her public well. She even nodded to me when I saw her out with the dogs once...would I even get chance to see her in the UK?
