Christmas trees banned for climate summit

Participants in the COP15 climate summit should not be subject to Christmas symbols such as fir trees, says the foreign ministry

Although the COP15 climate conference is set to take place during the Christmas season, the Foreign Ministry believes the holiday and all its symbols should be kept well clear of the summit.

That point was bluntly illustrated when a sponsorship providing numerous Nordmann fir trees for the conference was rejected by the ministry, according to public broadcaster DR.

The trees – the most common species used as Christmas trees in Denmark – were intended to be placed as decorations for the entrance of Bella Center, where the conference is taking place.

But Christmas is a religious holiday that has no place at a United Nations function, according to the Foreign Ministry’s Svend Olling, who is the head of practical planning for the climate summit.

‘We have to remember that this is a UN conference and, as the centre then becomes UN territory, there can be no Christmas trees in the decor, because the UN wishes to maintain neutrality,’ said Olling.

Nordmann firs otherwise fully live up to the climate-friendliness standards of the summit’s organisers. The firs are among the best trees at binding carbon dioxide and preventing its release into the atmosphere.

"The firs are among the best trees at binding carbon dioxide and preventing its release into the atmosphere. "

When still alive... They start releasing all that carbon dioxide when they are chopped down and start to rot.

that women wearing burkhas will also be banned from the Bella Center during this period of PC neutrality.

How very silly is banning Christmas Trees. Hopefully they will not be able to see the poluting cars passing either...

Hey can we also ban jewelery crosses on chains around delegate's necks, six-pointed brooch pins, any delegate wearing a head scarf or a bhurka, embroidered Hindu omkars, and let's not forget to ban any automobiles trying to drive by with custom aluminum wheels that look like the Buddhist Wheel of Life?

Some would say that the ban on religious symbols is because they don't want to be "distracted by such backwards ideas"... but really, I think its because this green religion doesn't want the competition. After all, you don't see a Minorah in a Catholic Church at Christmas, do you? Well, you won't see a Christmas Tree anywhere near the Enviro Church. The only problem with this church, though, is they demand tithes from everybody... and this summit is all about setting the rate, so we can all properly atone for all of our sins.

I would not bring a Christmas Tree to a Ramadan celebration. Why would I bring a Christmas Tree gathering of the Religous Zealots of Anthropogenic Global Warming? I would think it highly inappropriate.

Biggest joke of all time. This ckimate conference should be stopped now. It is a total sham, just a power grab by socialist and UN fools.
Christmas has more to do with everything than they ever will.
I am NOT a christian but to stop the Xmas influence is just rediculous.
I have a message for all the Church of Global Warming nutcases. Clean up your own lives before you tell me what to do.
There are many pressing pollution problems that are real issues like plastic pollution of the oceans that should be solved first.
WAKE UP PEOPLE - GET A GRIP and BOYCOTT thie madness NOW!!!

My hope for all of the politicians that try to make everyone else do what they won't, is to step down. Speakers who pretend to be righteously indignant over waste and "carbon." Carbon? It's what we're all made of! They want money from every sector of the world that actually produces something, yet produce nothing but hot air and economic confusion themselves.

Here comes Santa Clause...Oh, wait it's the UN-Democracy. There is no Christmas for you Virginia because the UN won't let me prove to you that I exist. If you haven't heard, Mr. Obama also prevented the airing of the traditional telecast of " Charlie Brown Christmas " so that he could tell Americans how he was going to send more troops overseas, as he attends his ceremony to receive the Nobel PEACE Prize for...uh, uh. Well, any way, Little Virginia where ever the UN goes they'll make sure that the populace will have no Christmas.

If this summit was held in a Muslim country there would be no banning of the call to prayer or any other Islamic symbol. In fact I do not believe that true Muslim are offended by Christian symbols. it is the nonreligious activists that are offended, who then become offended for others.

Well put pyramos.

Also banned are logic, intelligence, real scientific data and anyone with morals.
dianecarole  - Are they banning Christmas or CO2?   |2009-12-09 12:13:59
Sorry, it first I agreed that it may be a waste of resources to cut down Christmas trees just for decorations. Now I understand it is Christams they are banning...how stupid.
This is a Christian country, so why can't we celebrate Christmas. We don't dare to stop people celebrating Chinese New Year, Eid, Diwali, Hanukkah, (Sorry I don't know them all, apologies to any I have forgotten) or what ever other religious festival, for fear of being called racist.

I say we celebrate them all, embrace all.....but in a climate freiendly way ;o)
